International Programming: Television for All

Posted on Thursday 8 October 2009

As a nation of immigrants the United States has a very diverse population from just about every country on the planet. With so many people from other nations living here, it was clear to television programming providers that there was a market for international TV channels. Let’s face it, there are people around the world that are fanatical about their favorite sports teams and are willing to pay to see them play on television even if the game is taking place on the other side of the world.

The satellite TV providers seem to offer the most international programming when compared to cable TV. Both DISH Network and DirecTV offer extensive international programming from countries such as Japan, China, Italy, Israel and Poland to name just a few. This site has more extensive information regarding international programming from DISH Network.

DirecTV, on the other hand, offers a good variety of international programming as well, but I believe DISH Network’s offerings are a little more extensive. Cable TV, at least in my area, seems to offer significantly less international programming, although I am not familiar with offerings from the newer providers such as Verizon’s FiOS. I am sure the work will continue to make new services like FiOS available, since it seems that its availability is still quite limited for the time being.
