Hairspray is the story of a cheerful youngster named Tracy Turnblad, a would-be performer who wants to gain a position on a local TV show named the Corny Collins Show. The programme is essentially based on a Baltimore-based TV series referred to as the Buddy Dean Show in Baltimore, Maryland.

Hairspray went to London’s West End in two thousand and seven, opening for first previews at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October the eleventh, before being opened to the general public at its big opening on October 30, two thousand and seven. The musical production has had some big name actors — Michael Ball takes the part of Edna Turnblad, Tracy’s mother, giving marvellous interpretation in this difficult female role, whilst Mel Smith played joke shop landlord Wilbur Turnblad, Tracy’s father. The original cast in the London West End features newcomer to the theatre stage, Leanne Jones, in the main character of Tracy.

Hairspray the musical show has gained many positive mentions from journalists and theatre enthusiasts alike. Jacqueline said: “I have been to see the show four times up to now & I will be definitely going back at some point next week and a few more times also. I love the moment and wish they could stay on longer. Ben Ellis is astonishing as link & Leanne Jones as Tracey & Michael Ball, well they are all fabulous. The musical production of hairspray is unquestionably my favourite, merely because its upbeat and if you are feeling a little unhappy then it is guaranteed to make you feel so happy.
