Hairspray is the story of a high spirited student named Tracy Turnblad, a would-be dancer who hopes to gain a place on a local telly series called the Corny Collins Show. The show is actually based on a Baltimore-based show named the Buddy Dean Show in Baltimore, Maryland.
Tracy is unfamiliar in the performing world when she auditions, in spite of this she is elected for a place & with long odds becomes a dancing icon almost overnight. Tracy is over the moon with this brand new status, and she makes a decision to apply her recognition to help bring about positive developments to the program. The primary reason for these positive developments is to do with race. Hairspray came to London’s West End in two-thousand and seven, opening for press at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October 11, before being uncovered to the paying public at its main opening on October 30, 2007. The theatrical production has had some illustrious actors — Michael Ball plays one of the lead roles as Edna Turnblad, Tracy’s very own mother, delivering a fantastic performance in this testing female position, whilst Mel Smith played joke shop property-owner Wilbur Turnblad, Tracy’s father. The original cast in the London West End features newcomer to the theatre stage, Leanne Jones, in the main position of Tracy.

I love the show and wish they could stay on longer. Ben Ellis is exceptional as link & Leanne Jones as Tracey and Michael Ball, well they are all simply spectacular. The production of hairspray is undeniably my favourite, simply because it is positive & if you are feeling a bit unhappy then it is guaranteed to make you feel a whole lot happier.
