Recent reports suggest that there is an urgent need to reduce the pressure on employees in order to prevent a stress epidemic.
The President of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), Nattasha Freeman, has stated that it is important for employers to assist their workers in managing the stress of work in the office during this recessionary period.
Data gathered by You Gov shows that around 44% of the employees who were interviewed felt an increase in work pressure due to recession. Around 66% of them felt that they were mostly worried about losing their jobs and about 442,000 are afraid of falling sick due to work related stress. This research study is supported by another survey in which it was revealed that 13% of workers find their work exceedingly stressful.
The economic recession has obviously taken a toll on workers as the workload and on-the-job pressure has increased. However, the compensation for their work has decreased without any concurrent fall in the prices of goods and services. Moreover, workers are worried about losing their jobs. Stress due to work can be extremely harmful for people as it can disengage them from work. Work stress led to a wasted 13.5 million days of work last year. Therefore, there is a need to compel employers to prevent workers from feeling the pangs of stress. One of the methods to reduce stress is to promote the use of medical advice and health improvement services, for men in particular. People employed in public administration and defence, education, health, social sector etc. are known to be more prone to stress, and special attention should be given to these employees.
