2006 Triple Crown Prospect Euthanized

Posted on Friday 27 March 2009

Thoroughbred racing has been one of America’s favorite spectator sports; thousands of horseracing enthusiasts flock to stadiums and racetracks while millions of TV viewers stay glued to the television just to watch thoroughbreds race for glory, especially if a possible Triple Crown winner looms. After winning the 2006 Kentucky Derby, thoroughbred Barbaro was the heavy favorite to win both the 2006 Preakness Stakes and 2006 Belmont Stakes. The horse won the Kentucky Derby by a wide margin – 20 lengths – the largest gap since the 1946 Kentucky Derby (8 lengths). Prior to the Kentucky Derby, Barbaro was undefeated in four other major thoroughbred races. In the simplest of terms, Barbaro might have won the Triple Crown. This was not to be so. The 2006 Preakness Stakes proved to be Barbaro’s last race. The horse suffered a fatal accident after a bad start. It shattered its right hind leg in more than 20 places. Obviously, hopes for a long career in racing were over.Although dogs and cats can still function even with only three limbs functioning, the case is different with thoroughbreds. Thoroughbreds are built for speed, not durability. A fractured limb will cause the horse to shift its weight to the other limbs, which can cause severe complications.Although there were series of surgeries done on Barbaro after the fall at Preakness Stakes, Barbaro suffered complications on all limbs. At that point, veterinarians and Barbaro’s owner concluded that it was virtually over for the horseracing legend. After almost a year since the accident at Preakness, Barbaro was euthanized on January 29, 2007.
