Fine Early Snow for the Alps

Posted on Friday 27 February 2009

Global warming and the recession, these twin risks have spared the Alps, at least for now. But it could have been so altogether contrary. In the weeks before Xmas towns in the Les Grands Montets area were isolated as avalanches hammered down. Dual carriage way routes such as the crowded Col du Le Tour were cut. There was no power or telephone lines, residents were moved out to temporary housing, it appeared like the repeat of 1996.

It seems that all promotion is good promotion. Les Gets appeared every evening on national French news bulletins. Immediately electricity was restored reservations commenced to come in, drawn in by the great skiing conditions.

La Clusaz and neigboring Tignes claim almost 4.5 feet base on the higher slopes at 2500 metres elevation and 2.3 m at the bottom of the runs. At the moment the deepest in France. La Grave claims there is three meters at the the highest point of the resort. Unluckily avalanches have knocked over a support of the chair lift that accesses the area. They will be out of commission till mid February. In other places in the Alps bookings have increased 20% in Serre Chevalier, Risoul and Luz Ardiden. Araches-la-Frasse has 99 tenancy and sold a record breaking number of passes on Thursday. This is good for luxury ski resorts and main snowboarding businesses.
