Since bringing a sugar glider into the family is not a decision to make lightly, and a lot of research and understanding is needed to insure their health and happiness, many people are reluctant to invest in more than one sugar glider when they are first starting out. This is both a good idea and a bad one. Knowing why can help make your decision the right one for you and your new sugar glider.
Sugar gliders are by nature communal animals. They live in tight-knit colonies and bond with their colony members for life. They are devoted and loving. This makes them a great pet because when you bring your sugar glider into your home YOU become their family. Your entire family and all the pets living in your home will become a part of the big sugar glider colony in your new baby’s eyes.
If you have only one sugar glider, this puts all of the responsibility for their need for companionship on you. That is one reason why many people will bring two home at once so that if they are very busy, spend a lot of time at work, or at school, and evening activities, their glider will not suffer from being completely alone.
Having two sugar gliders will NOT impair their ability to bond with you. Some new sugar glider owners worry that their new pets will bond with each other and not them. This is not the case at all. Remember that sugar gliders come from a natural ‘colony’ background so they can bond very intensely with an entire group. Of course, the more time you spend with your glider or gliders the more you will become the primary person in their lives.
If you decide that it is better to go slow and only bring home one in the beginning, that is okay too as long as you understand the need your new sugar glider has for companionship. This can work fine even for the busiest person as companionship does not necessarily mean total attention. Your sugar glider will be perfectly happy tucked in a pocket or on your shoulder as you do your activities. They make for a great conversation starter that way too!
